The bike test

The highlight of third grade in our area is the bike test. In April, the third grader bring their bikes to  school (note I said “bring” not “ride.”). Then police officers test them, watching them ride a figure 8, and use hand signals for turning and stopping.

Before this, they’re not allowed to bike to school. As in, their bike is not even allowed on school property. And the penalty if they DO bike to school before getting their license? (yes, they actually got a small paper license, in addition o the bike registration sticker). Well, no one seems to know what the penalty is. But it’s thought to be BAAAAAAD.

Oddly, they’re not taught any bike rules. Like whether they should bike on the street or the sidewalk. Or the correct way to lock up their bike.

Dori passed the test. On the second try. Apparently the mean officer didn’t see Dori do one of the hand signals that she clearly did. So she had to go to the back of the line to wait before doing it again. But now she has her license.
