The ceiling leak

Tuesday night Dori was sitting in her favorite living room chair (June’s old living room chair) and she yelled to us in the kitchen. “I just got wet.”

Sure enough, there’s a leak from the ceiling.

leak

Yes, it’s a plaster ceiling.

It’s directly below the master bathroom, which had no visible leaks. And it’s next to a ceiling section that has clearly been replaced – before we moved into the house.

Fortunately the plumber’s wife answered the call at 8:45 p.m. and the plumber had an opening first thing in the morning. It was the same problem we had in our basement twice in the last two years – a tiny hole in the copper pipe.

Mushy boards below, too.

It’s not like we have a Bat Mitzvah in one week…and 45 people coming for Mother’s Day brunch at the house.

Fortunately (again), the home improvement contractor was willing to quote me over the phone (with pictures sent via text message) and he had someone come today to repair the hole and repaint the entire ceiling today.

The hole is not a little neater.

The hole is now a little neater.

I gave the contractor the wrong paint color (even though I had it written in my trusty notes). That color was too yellow. Sigh. Now I’m paying for the unused paint and the contractor is running back to the store for plain white (though we all know there is no such thing as plain white, in paint).

In the meantime, the contractor’s car battery died because he left the car on for several hours. Oops! He had to push the car into the street and borrow my jumper cables (and car) to get his going again.

Yes, it’s been one of those days.

And as soon as I turned the lights on to look at the final job, we noticed the light bulb had gone out near the patch job. Sigh. Got that replaced.

Patched, with everything covered for painting.

Like new!

Like new! Or hopefully it will look new when the paint dries in the corner. Otherwise, what a waste to just paint the patch!

NNow it’s time for cocktails.
