News of the Weird

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted about favorite news stories in New Jersey. So here are three:

#1

JERSEY ACCENTS ARE ANNOYING

I know, this isn’t really news, but…someone did a study with 56 hiring professionals. They were…

“asked to make judgments about potential based solely on how candidates, with different regional accents, sounded. The hirers were asked to judge if each speaker sounded educated or uneducated, intelligent or unintelligent, energetic or lazy, uptight or laid back, outgoing or withdrawn, assertive or docile.

Of the 10 regional accents, a distinctive “New Jersey” accent received the most negative rating by hiring professionals. When asked to decide what types of jobs the individuals were suited for based solely on their accents, only 5 percent of the hirers selected the New Jersey speaker for positions requiring a high level of customer contact and more than 64 percent selected the New Jersey speaker for positions requiring little technical expertise and little-to-no customer contact.”

BE CAREFUL WHEN WALKING AS YOU ARE DOING SO AT YOUR OWN RISK

This is a letter to the editor from our local paper.

“At the very end of 2010, I tripped and fell on a badly maintained pedestrian sidewalk…in our town.”

She asked the home owner to pay for her broken glasses and the owner’s attorney said no, because the homeowner isn’t responsible for the sidewalk in front of the home. She filed a claim with the town’s insurance carrier and eventually the claim was denied because the city had no prior notice of a problem there. I’ll spare you the endless details. She ends with these words of wisdom:

“So my fellow residents take note. Be careful when walking in our residential neighborhoods. You are walking at your own risk.”

COPS: AT THIS DUNKIN’ DONUTS, SEX WAS ON THE MENU

(this article should win a headline award – that was the headline in our local paper – the one online is more boring)

“Police dubbed the operation “extra sugar.”” The donut worker was soliciting sex while working the drive-thru during her overnight shift. After arrested she gave her side of the story: “I am not some whore,” she said. She admitted taking money from people who were her friends, and sometimes those people could use a little company, she said. Though she claims she never did anything on DD property, the detective who tailed her in this case (pun intended), reported seeing her in cars on the property. I’ll let you read the whole story if you want. It’s actually kind of sad.
